Japanese Divisional Organisations
The Japanese Army had a particularly fluid approach to Divisional organisation. The Allies classified Japanese Infantry Divisions into three types, "A", "B" and "C".
Type "A" was the strengthened version found in China and Manchuria.
The Japanese Strengthened Infantry Division
Type "B" was the more normal Division used in the Far East and the Pacific.
The Standard Japanese Infantry Division
Type "C" were Garrison Divisions found in China and not covered here.
The Island Warfare Division was identified during 1944 but there appears to be some debate as to just how widely it was adopted. Reports indicate at least four Divisions reorganised on these lines with another two more unconfirmed.
