Armoured Units

There is a problem when attempting to apply the same format to any description of armoured units as that applied to their infantry equivalents discussed in this site.  Unlike the average Infantryman, who to the best of my knowledge only appears in the 'Mark I' model, tanks developed into a series of variants, some differing marginally others substantially from earlier versions.  A single armoured unit may deploy a number of notably different machines in its roster, either as a deliberately mixed formation or because of problems of replacement.

I'm not a petrol head, I can tell a Cromwell from a Sherman and a Tiger from a JS2, but I do not claim to have instant recall of the technical data.  That's what text books are for.  So the following pages are simply a guide to the various organisations issued for the armoured units of the major combatants.  There is also a brief description of the tanks deployed by said nations to provide a context for the units described.

As with the Infantry, examples of the Divisional formations the Battalions served in can be found elsewhere in the site.
